Kelvin Lim’s work published in The Straits Times today

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

My work has been published today on the national paper, The Straits Times, on the cover story of the Life! section.

The story, “Sexy Singapore”, talks about Singaporeans becoming more open about nudity and sex.  The spotlight was on my client, Ronnie & Jaslyn Choh who, despite sharing an apartment with their parents, prominently displayed 6 nude photos at home.  The wonderful part was how everyone, including the parents, accepted the photos as works of art instead of some trashy taboo.

As their photographer, I feel grateful and proud.

The most difficult part of committing such a major part of my portfolio in nude photography, is that I can’t always show what I regard as my best work.  Obviously, this is based on a strict principle to protect my clients’ privacy.  It is therefore a wonderful blessing whenever clients allow me to display the photos in my portfolio.

They’re not the only ones, though.  To help the Straits Times’ reporter with the story, I contacted more clients who’ve just had their photos taken.  Every single one of them agreed to be interviewed and had their photos featured.  I must be on a roll.  It’s a shame they weren’t featured in the story, but I can’t tell you how thankful I am to them for putting so much faith in me.

Ronnie, Jaslyn and many clients remain my friends years after their photos were taken.  It’s an amazing feeling, something that money can’t buy.

Don’t blame the location

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Some weeks ago, RazorTV interviewed me about unusual locations for wedding photos.  I invited them to join me for a night shoot at Joo Chiat with Michelle & Saiful (awesome couple).

Here’s the thing: I wasn’t particularly keen on the topic.  Why does everyone believe that unique locations make unique photographs? Everyone thinks that photos are “normal” because they’re done in the same places – studio, botanical gardens, or some beach with standard poses.  Even photographers feel the same.  No wonder most wedding photos are boring.

Photographs are made by photographers.  Don’t blame the location.  If every photographer cares enough to use their imagination, every photo will be special, simply because every photographer is unique.

Anyway, we had great fun during the shoot.  The RazorTV crew were nice people, very sporting, and followed us right till the shoot ends.  So thank you, and my name is “Lim”, not “Kim”, so please change it in the video before I change my mind about you.

[Edit: The video now shows my name correctly]

I must mention that Michelle & Saiful didn’t request for any particularly special location.  They trusted me entirely, and left all decisions to me.  Thank you, I couldn’t have asked for more.

Here are the clips on RazorTV.  Michelle & Saiful’s night shoot is featured mainly in part 2, and in bits of part 1.

New Studio: 54 Old Upper Thomson Road

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

3 weeks ago, we moved into our new studio at 54 Old Upper Thomson Road, a private house right on the edge of the forest at Lower Pierce Reservoir.  I’ve hardly had time for a breather until now, trying to cope with a crazy schedule of photography assignments and post-production.  I’m glad I have time to write this now!

New Studio: 54 Old Upper Thomson Road

New Studio: 54 Old Upper Thomson Road

I love this place for it’s quiet surroundings. Studio space has doubled in size, allowing me to explore lighting possibilities previously impossible in the old studio. This simply means more fun for me, and even more beautiful pictures for clients.

I can’t ask for more!

WPPI 2009 Award Winning Entries

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Kelvin Lim has been awarded special honours in the (… inhale…) Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) 2009 Awards of Excellence 16×20 Print Competition (… exhale…).

4 prints were submitted, 2 have been awarded Accolades of Excellence.  The other 2 missed the honours by a single point.

This is my first entry into WPPI.  My work is judged against 2717 other entries worldwide, not just by wedding photographers (there are so many, geez…), but also by a field of internationally acclaimed portrait artists, including commercial photographers.  This year, the award criteria and points system has been made even more stringent due to the large number of entries.  This is the reason why I entered this competition, to be judged against the elite.

The winning entries were exhibited in the WPPI 2009 show, arguably the largest convention in the US for professional photographers.  Here are the 2 winning entries:

art-13.jpg Simply Beautiful

These are the 2 that just missed it:

I am proud to be honoured in this competition – to a certain extent.  Award or no award, I’ve yet to realise my full potential.  I am very demanding of myself.  Nonetheless, I’ll bask in this moment for a little while.

Jan 2009: Interview by ExtraOrdinary Weddings

Kelvin Lim

Experience: 8 years

We are proud to have interviewed photographer, Kelvin Lim. Read on for a glimpse of his world.

Something About Kelvin
I am a run-of-the-mill Singaporean who graduated with an IT degree. After spending 7 years of my career in the IT industry, I decided to make a career switch to pursue my creative hunger. There’s also this inclination to always want to be different.

How Did He Get Started?
The decision came to me naturally 6 years ago, although I had no prior experience in photography, I’m fortunate to be blessed with a creative flair. The desire to fully exploit my artistic potential consumed me and I am still hungry for more. I am very lucky to have met a few very influential people whom had provided their generous guidance – without them I won’t be where I am now in my artistic career.

Working Style
I simply be myself! I believe clients can feel the passion I have for my “job”, and that I am truly enjoying myself. I guide them through every step of the way. I also try to connect with them, to understand how they feel during the shoot and also treat each client as a unique individual and a friend. I believe all these help them to trust me, and eventually make them feel natural and relaxed throughout the shoot – this formula has always helped to produce great pictures.

What Inspires Him?
I’m inspired by people – how beautiful and different each individual are. When I meet someone, could be anyone, I can always feel something I like about them, and I love to capture that. I love the challenge of bringing out the best in people.

Philosophy in Work and Life
Life is like a painting, the paintbrush is in our own hands. In my last days, I would like to hold up my own painting and say to myself – it’s beautiful.

Unique Photography Experience
It has to be my private sessions (nude or semi-nude photography). It takes a lot for a person to remove their clothes in front of the camera for nude or semi-nude photography session. At the end of every shoot, I’ll always have clients telling me how comfortable they are during the shoot and how much they enjoyed the experience. It’s a very special feeling to be trusted.
Being their photographer is my greatest privilege.

What do you want to see more of in wedding photography?
I hope to see more photographers taking a bigger step forward, and rise to the international stage. We have very promising talents; some are now doing very well locally. A very common problem is that the focus seems to shift to getting more customers rather than creating even better images to rival world class photographers in order to tackle the bread and butter issue. Our prices, professionalism and respect for intellectual property are still behind the world best, hopefully we can improve on that.

One Thing a Client Should Know about Choosing Her Photographer Is…

What really sets a great photographer apart from a good one is the ability to deliver great results in every assignment. A great photographer must be able to create the standard required by the wedding couple. A few good images or a couple of album do not make a good photographer.

An ExtraOrdinary Bride is…
A bride who knows what she wants.

His Definition of an ExtraOrdinary Wedding?
A wedding created out of love. It can be the most extravagant, unique, meticulous, or it the most simple and down-to-earth, but what connects everything together is love.
